Goliath – An Animated Short About Race Warfare

For Flashless iPhone/Android users: This film is also on YouTube.

I don’t have much to say about this, as I feel it speaks for itself. I should mention, though, that once I figured out the best workflow, this film took an average of under one hour of work per second of finished animation. It’s 268 seconds, and I completed all the art, animation, and sound editing in less than a week. Granted, about 36 hours of that work happened consecutively; I totally would have done stuff like eat and go to sleep if it wasn’t due at 6 PM yesterday (it was a project for my Editing class). Nonetheless, a 3600:1 ratio of work vs. finished footage is, I’m willing to bet, significantly lower than mainstream hyper-expensive Hollywood productions, and would probably be feasible for a high quality film if only I was working with someone who was good at drawing. I’m not implying that I created a Pixar-quality film, but it’s technically on par with Dragon Ball Z, if not artistically.

Also, Kyle Gabler is awesome for letting me use his music in this. He originally composed the three songs spliced into this for World of Goo, which is way up there with Grim Fandango and Portal on my short list of Games You Should Play Before You Die But Preferably Right Now. So after watching this movie, go get World of Goo. Here are fifteen links to the exact same page at which you can do this.

Plankhead.com: Now Too Awesome For My Network

I’m posting this from my G1 because my site is timing out from my computer. But it still loads (not fast enough to post with but loads nonetheless) via a proxy. Also my host says nothing is wrong on their end.

Perhaps my unrelenting FTP transfers (hey, I want to get my font size to look EXACTLY right, and that involves updating the CSS over and over) triggered a red flag. Oh well. I sent the techies an email.

Oh, by the way…Dear School of Visual Arts network administrators: This is my website. It’s not evil. I promise. Thanks. Also can you give me Diggs? That would be awesome.

    So now we wait…

      Bloggity Bloogity Bleegity Blaggity!

Oh, hello, Internet. I didn’t see you there.

But now that you’re here I suppose I should blog at you. BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGGGGGGGGGGG.

So tomorrow (well, today, technically) the Spring semester of classes at SVA start up for me. They actually started the 12th but I have no Monday classes. But yeah, when I wake up after…sleeping I’ll be heading back to my Production class. I’m excited for this semester since we’ll be able to spend the entire duration of it working on one short film. And with six months to put together ten minutes, how can I NOT make it epic?

Anyway, the idea I’ll be proposing is “Bright Black,” a short glimpse into the life of a manic secret agent who thinks he has the best job in the world. And 99% of the lighting used will be black light.

I think it’s going to work out quite well; shooting in a studio won’t be a problem since most of the light will be focused outside revealing areas. I’m hoping that in the darkness I can create the illusion that the space is larger or more complex than it really is.

I’ve got a work-in-progress of the script up right now. Less than two thirds of the whole thing are written so far, but I know where I’m going with it.

I’m hoping to cast Santo Ciaravino in the lead role if he can work with me again. He played Mike in “The Drawing Board,” which is the movie I made for last semester’s final project. You can watch it and most of my other half-decent stuff on my Vimeo page.

It’s almost 3 AM and I should sleep now so more blaggitying later.
